What Dentures Do

A denture replaces missing teeth with a removable plate that sits in your mouth. It restores your ability to chew normally, holds your face shape (which can collapse a little when teeth are lost), and gives you back a natural smile. A well-made denture should fit comfortably, look natural and feel stable when you talk and eat.
Dentures aren't what they used to be. Modern materials are stronger, lighter and look much more natural. And if a denture moves around when you eat, we can usually fix that by adding implants underneath to clip the denture in place - making it as stable as fixed teeth while still removable for cleaning.

Who Dentures Are For:

  • Patients with several missing teeth where implants aren't realistic or affordable
  • People who already wear dentures and need a replacement set
  • Patients who have lost all their upper or lower teeth
  • People with partial gaps where a bridge or implant isn't suitable
  • Existing denture wearers struggling with movement or fit

Problems Dentures Solve:

  • Chewing and eating difficulty from missing teeth
  • Loss of facial structure where teeth are missing
  • The appearance of a gap when you smile
  • Worn-out or poorly fitting existing dentures
  • Embarrassment about speaking or eating in public
  • Loose or unstable existing dentures (we can add implants)

Loose Denture? Add Implants.

If your existing denture moves when you eat or speak, we can stabilise it by adding implants underneath. The denture clips on like press-studs. Stable for chewing, removable for cleaning. Usually 4 implants in the upper jaw or 2 in the lower.

The Denture Options We Offer

Three denture options, from simple acrylic to implant-stabilised.

Acrylic Dentures

The most common type. A pink acrylic base with denture teeth set into it. Light, easy to adjust and the most affordable option. Available as full upper or lower (replacing all teeth) or partial (replacing some).

Cobalt Chrome Metal-Base Dentures

A lighter, stronger alternative for partial dentures, with a thin metal framework instead of a thick acrylic base. Less bulky in the mouth, better long-term fit, and the metal connectors are less visible than acrylic clasps. Generally the better choice for partials if budget allows.

Implant-Stabilised Dentures

Any denture can be combined with implants to lock it into place. The denture itself sits over locator attachments fitted to the implants, clipping on like press-studs. Stable for chewing, removable for cleaning, and life-changing for long-term denture wearers.

How New Dentures Are
Made at Tangmere

1

Consultation and Plan

We look at your existing teeth (if any), your bite, the shape of your mouth, and what you'd like the new denture to look like. We discuss material options - acrylic, cobalt chrome, or implant-stabilised - and the trade-offs of each.

2

Impressions and Bite Records

We take initial impressions of your upper and lower jaws. For more precise cases we'd take a second set of impressions in custom-made trays. We also record how your upper and lower teeth bite together.

3

Try-In

Before the final denture is made, we do a wax try-in. This is the denture teeth set in wax, so you can see what the final look will be. You comment, we adjust the shape, position and colour. Only when you're happy do we send it for finishing.

4

Fit and Adjust

The finished denture is fitted. Most patients need 1-2 small adjustment visits in the following weeks as the denture settles in - any rubbed spots or pressure points get smoothed off until it's comfortable.

Frequently Asked Questions About
Dentures

Anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. New dentures always feel strange at first - speech can be a little affected, and chewing takes practice. Most patients adapt within 2-4 weeks. We do small adjustments along the way to make sure it stays comfortable.

Take them out at night so the gums can rest. Brush them daily with a soft brush and denture cleaner (not normal toothpaste, which is too abrasive). Soak overnight in denture solution to keep them clean and prevent bacteria building up.

Typically 5-8 years before they need replacing. The shape of your gums and jaw changes over time, especially after teeth are first lost, so even a well-made denture eventually stops fitting properly.

Yes. Modern denture teeth come in a wide range of shades, shapes and sizes. We choose them to match your existing teeth (for partials) or to look age-appropriate and natural (for full dentures). The try-in stage lets you see and approve the look before the denture is finalised.

For partial dentures, often yes. They're significantly less bulky, more comfortable in the mouth, last longer and the clasps are less visible. For most patients who can stretch to the cost, they're a noticeably better experience day to day. For full dentures we usually use acrylic.

We can stabilise them with implants. We place a small number of implants (4 in the upper jaw or 2 in the lower is typical) and the denture clips onto them. The denture becomes stable for chewing and speech, but still comes out for cleaning. Patients who've made this change describe it as life-changing.

Yes - usually for the better. Missing teeth cause the lower face to collapse a little over time. A well-made denture supports your lips and cheeks back to their natural position, so you look younger and more like yourself.

Yes. We offer payment options for larger denture cases, including 0% finance over various terms. We'll go through the figures and options at your consultation.
