New Patients at Tangmere

A warm welcome to Tangmere Dental Care. We can currently take a small number of new private patients, and everything you need to know before your first visit is on this page: how to register, what happens at your first appointment, what it costs, and how we work as a practice.

Welcome to Tangmere

We are a family-run independent dental practice in Tangmere, just outside Chichester, and we have been here since 1988. Most of our patients have been with us for years, and many of our team for a decade or more. If you are thinking of joining us, the place to start is a new patient examination: a thorough 40- to 60-minute assessment of your teeth, gums and general mouth health. Everything else follows from what we find there.

Are You Taking On New Patients?

Taking new private patients, in limited numbers

The practice is approaching capacity, but spaces do come up, and calling reception on 01243 775545 is the quickest way to find out where we stand today. We can usually book a new patient examination within a few weeks. We are not taking new NHS patients, because our NHS contract is limited and is being phased out, so new registrations are private only.
We can only offer emergency treatment to patients already registered with us. If you are not registered and need urgent help, contact the NHS out-of-hours service at The Jubilee Centre, St Richard's Hospital, Chichester on 01243 793697.

Reception will check availability and answer your questions before you commit to anything.

Book your new patient examination

We may suggest a separate imaging appointment if a full picture needs more than we can take on the day.

Fill in your medical history form

We send it out in advance so you can complete it at home rather than rushing it in the waiting room.

Come to the appointment

You will leave knowing where your dental health stands and what, if anything, we would recommend.

Decide whether Tangmere is right for you

There is no commitment at this point, and if you do want to register we will explain the next steps.

What the First Appointment Involves

This is a good deal more thorough than a quick check-up, because we want a complete picture of your mouth before we suggest anything at all.

£100

examination, or £170 with imaging

40–60 min

thorough assessment
It costs £100, plus £70 for the imaging package if your clinician recommends it on the day, which is normal for a first full assessment. So expect the visit to come to £100 or £170, paid on the day, with card payment preferred.
Here is what the examination covers:

Head and neck check

We feel around the lymph nodes and tissues for anything unusual — standard medical screening a good dentist includes every time.

Jaw joint check

We feel for clicking, restricted movement or strain caused by your bite.

Gum assessment

A Basic Periodontal Examination, the international scoring system for spotting gum disease.

Full dental charting

A tooth-by-tooth record of your existing fillings, crowns, missing teeth, wear and decay.

Tooth wear analysis

Heavy wear can point to grinding, clenching or a bite problem underneath.

Bite check

An unbalanced bite can cause pain well beyond your teeth — in the joints and muscles of the head and neck, and sometimes in the spine, legs or feet.

Magnified video assessment

Our camera picks up decay, wear and hairline cracks invisible to the naked eye, and the images go up on a screen so you can see them too.

X-rays, if recommended

These show what is happening below the surface: decay between teeth, infection at a root tip, or bone loss from gum disease.

Findings and options

We explain what we have found in plain English, set out the treatment choices and give you the costs.

What to bring with you

  • Your completed medical history form
  • Any recent X-rays from a previous dentist, if you have them
  • A payment method for the £100 examination, plus £70 if imaging is taken
  • A list of your current medications, with doses and how often you take them
  • Glasses or contact lenses, as we will show you images on a screen

Finding us and Arriving

We are just off the A27 in Tangmere village, with a large free car park shared with the village centre and disabled spaces available. The whole building is on the ground floor and step-free, and reception is straight through the main door on your left. Please try to arrive 5 to 10 minutes early so we can register you and check your details, and the clinical part of your appointment can start on time.

After your First Appointment

You will leave with a clear summary of your dental health and written quotes for any recommended treatment, which you can take away and think about. Nobody will ask you to commit to anything on the day.
If there is significant work to do we will book a follow-up appointment, and if everything is stable we will schedule your next routine examination. Ring us afterwards with any questions that occur to you at home.

What to expect from us

Three things shape every visit here, whether it's your first or your fortieth.

We would rather under-treat than over-treat — and when cosmetic work is right, we do it beautifully, but never at the expense of healthy teeth.

How we think about your treatment plan

Real continuity, not a rota

We're not part of a chain, and our clinicians aren't measured on how much treatment they sell. We've stayed deliberately small with a long-serving team, so the person treating you knows your history, spots small changes you'd never notice, and treats your mouth as a pattern over a decade — not a series of one-off visits.

Prevention first, always

Regular hygiene visits, thorough exams, early-detection technology and gentle drill-free treatment all exist to stop small problems becoming expensive ones. If something looks worrying but is actually fine, we'll say so. If a tooth is better watched than filled, we'll tell you that too.

Technology that earns its place

Cerec same-day porcelain since 2007, low-dose digital X-rays and computerised gum assessment. Every piece has to make diagnosis more accurate, treatment less invasive, or the visit safer — or it doesn't stay.

What Makes Tangmere Dental Care Different

Advanced Technology, Natural Approach

We invest in the most modern dental systems — Cerec, magnification, digital imaging — while keeping our care grounded in prevention and the maintenance of health.

Same-Day Crowns & Restorations

Our Cerec system creates solid porcelain crowns, inlays and veneers in a single visit — no impressions, no temporaries, no return appointment needed.

Accessible, Purpose-Built Facility

Ground-floor practice with disabled access, free parking, disabled spaces, and high-capacity dental chairs (up to 29 stone). Easy access from Chichester, Arundel, Bognor Regis and Portsmouth.

Prevention-Led, Long-Term Care

Our focus is on stopping problems before they start. From advanced diagnostics to drill-free options where suitable, we plan care around protecting your health for decades.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Just call us. You do not need a referral from your GP or anyone else.

Yes. We look after patients of all ages. An examination is £40 for children under 6 and £60 for ages 6 to 17, and the Denplan for Children plan is available once your child is registered.

Usually not. The first visit is purely an assessment, because we want to understand what is going on before we treat anything. Treatment is booked separately once you have agreed the plan.

Recent X-rays do, and they are very helpful: if they are from the last 6 to 12 months we can often use them rather than taking new ones, so ask your old practice for digital copies. A Denplan membership transfers too, because it is held with Simplyhealth Professionals rather than the practice, and we will help with the paperwork. If you are part-way through a course of treatment elsewhere, we would usually suggest finishing it there first.

No. You can pay as you go for as long as you like. Plans are an optional way to save money on regular care, and they usually work out cheaper than paying visit by visit. We would suggest finishing any initial treatment before joining one, and we will never push you into it.
Tangmere Dental Care is a private dental practice combining advanced technology with prevention-led, holistic care. Our mission is to help patients across West Sussex maintain healthy, durable smiles for life.
