Our General Dentistry Services

Five core services that cover the day-to-day work of looking after your teeth.

Dental Health Examinations

A proper look at your teeth, gums, jaw and bite. Your first visit takes around an hour because we want to know what's actually going on. After that, regular maintenance visits are usually 20 minutes, every six to twelve months.

Hygiene Services

Hygiene appointments at Tangmere are done by our Dental Therapists, who have over twice the training of a standard hygienist. They'll show you what good cleaning actually feels like and remove the build-up your toothbrush can't reach.

Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)

A newer way to clean teeth using AIRFLOW: a controlled stream of air, water and fine powder. No metal scraping. Removes plaque, staining and biofilm. Most patients say it feels far better than a traditional scale and polish.

White Fillings

We only use white filling materials. No amalgam. If you have old silver fillings that need replacing, we use barrier systems to protect you from mercury exposure during removal.

Prediction & Prevention

We use magnified video and digital X-rays to spot potential problems before they happen. The aim is fewer fillings over time, not more.

What is General Dentistry

General dentistry is the routine, day-to-day work of keeping your teeth and gums healthy. Check-ups, cleaning, fillings, advice on how to look after your teeth at home. It's the foundation everything else builds on.
Our approach is "health before cure". The healthiest tooth is the one you were born with, properly looked after. Every repair has a lifespan, so the fewer repairs you ever need, the better. The goal is simple: keep your own teeth healthy for as long as possible.

Problems we deal with day to day

  • Tooth decay and cavities
  • Plaque and tartar build-up
  • Worn or cracked teeth
  • Surface staining
  • Early gum disease and bleeding gums
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Old fillings that need replacing
  • Patients who've not been in a while

Who's it for?

Anyone with teeth. Whether you've been seeing a dentist every six months for the last twenty years, or you've not been in for a decade, we'll take you as you are. We see a lot of nervous patients and we're set up to give you the time you need.

Why Regular Dental Care Matters

We spot problems early

Decay and gum disease usually don't hurt until they're advanced. By the time you feel it, it's a bigger job. Regular check-ups catch things while they're still small and cheap to fix.

Less treatment over a lifetime

The longer your teeth stay healthy, the fewer fillings, crowns and extractions you'll ever need. Prevention is genuinely cheaper than repair.

Cleaner teeth, fresher mouth

Professional cleaning, especially with GBT, removes the build-up brushing can't get to and leaves teeth feeling smoother and looking brighter.

Linked to whole-body health

Gum disease is linked to heart disease, diabetes and several other conditions. Looking after your mouth is part of looking after the rest of you.

We predict, not just react

We use computerised risk assessments to work out your personal risk for decay, gum disease, tooth wear and oral cancer — so we can act before it happens.

You know where you stand

You see the same clinician each visit. They know your history. You're not starting over with someone new every six months.

What to Expect at Tangmere

Here's how your first visits with us work.

1

The first visit (around an hour)

A head and neck check, jaw joint check, gum scoring, tooth-by-tooth charting, a look at your bite, and a magnified video walkthrough so you can see what we see. X-rays only if we need them.

2

Diagnosis and options

We tell you what we've found, in plain language, and what your options are. Costs upfront. If you want to think about it, you think about it. No pressure to commit on the day.

3

Hygiene with a Dental Therapist

Most patients pair their check-up with a hygiene appointment. Our Therapists do this work — more training, more time with you, and better results than a standard hygienist visit.

4

Maintenance visits

Once you're at a healthy baseline, we set a schedule that fits your risk level — usually every six to twelve months.

Frequently Asked Questions About General Dentistry

For most people, every six months. If your risk of decay or gum disease is higher, we may suggest more often. If you're in great shape, we might stretch it to twelve months. We set the interval based on you, not a one-size-fits-all rule.

On a maintenance visit (around 20 minutes) we check each tooth, look at your gums, screen for anything unusual, and review the condition of any existing fillings or crowns. We only take X-rays or use the intra-oral video if we see something that needs a closer look. On a first visit it's much more thorough and takes about an hour.

No. We see this often. You won't get told off. We'll assess where you're at, explain what we find, and put together a plan to get you sorted. We can take it at the pace that works for you.

It's a Swiss-developed cleaning system that uses a fine jet of air, warm water and powder to remove plaque, staining and biofilm. No metal scraping. It's gentler than a standard scale and polish, works above and below the gumline, and leaves teeth feeling noticeably smoother. We use it as standard in our hygiene appointments.

Yes. White only. We don't use amalgam. If you have old silver fillings that need replacing, we use barrier systems to protect you from mercury during removal. For the most durable filling we use Cerec ceramic, which we can make and fit on the same day.

We're close to capacity but we do have occasional spaces for new private patients. We have no NHS spaces available at the moment. The best thing is to call us on 01243 775545 to check current availability.

Dental Therapists do our hygiene work. Therapists have over twice the training of a hygienist and can do more, including fillings and treating early gum disease. It means more time with you in the chair and a better end result.
