A hygiene appointment has two jobs. The first is teaching you to clean your own teeth properly at home. The second is removing the build-up your toothbrush can't reach. Done well, both together mean fewer fillings, healthier gums, and a mouth that feels noticeably better between visits.
At Tangmere, hygiene appointments are done by Dental Therapists rather than standard hygienists. Therapists have more training and can do more, which means more useful time with you in the chair. Every appointment also has a Dental Nurse on hand, which keeps things safer and quicker.

Book your appointment
You can see one of our Dental Therapists directly for hygiene work - you don't need to see a dentist first. Bring your own toothbrush, floss and any interdental brushes or mouth rinse you use, so we can check your technique.
We look at your gums and teeth, check for any new build-up since your last visit, and ask how you've been getting on with your home care. If anything has changed since your last appointment, this is when we pick it up.

Cleaning With Guided Biofilm Therapy
Most of the appointment is the actual clean. We use Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) as standard - a gentle stream of air, warm water and fine powder that removes plaque, staining and biofilm without the scratchy scraping of metal scalers. It works above and below the gumline, and patients consistently tell us it's the most comfortable cleaning they've had.

Personal Cleaning Coaching
We'll show you how to clean your own teeth properly using your own brush and floss. Bring whatever you use at home. Good technique is more important than an expensive brand of toothbrush, and most people pick up at least one thing they could be doing better.

Plan for Next Time
We agree when your next hygiene visit should be. Most people come in every six months. If you're at higher risk, we may suggest every three or four months. If you're in great shape, we may stretch it to twelve.
We invest in the most modern dental systems — Cerec, magnification, digital imaging — while keeping our care grounded in prevention and the maintenance of health.
Same-Day Crowns & Restorations
Our Cerec system creates solid porcelain crowns, inlays and veneers in a single visit — no impressions, no temporaries, no return appointment needed.
Accessible, Purpose-Built Facility
Ground-floor practice with disabled access, free parking, disabled spaces, and high-capacity dental chairs (up to 29 stone). Easy access from Chichester, Arundel, Bognor Regis and Portsmouth.
Prevention-Led, Long-Term Care
Our focus is on stopping problems before they start. From advanced diagnostics like the Florida gum probe to drill-free options where suitable, we plan care around protecting your health for decades.
We believe in transparent pricing and flexible payment options to make quality private dental care accessible. Our fees are clearly explained before treatment begins, and we offer membership plans to help you spread the cost of routine care.
For most people, every six months. If you're at higher risk of gum disease, we may suggest every three or four months. If you're in great shape, we may stretch it to twelve. We set the interval based on you.
Dental Therapists have over twice the training of a standard hygienist and can do more, including some fillings and treating early gum disease. At Tangmere, our Therapists do all our hygiene work, with a Dental Nurse assisting throughout.
No. You can book a hygiene appointment with one of our Dental Therapists without seeing a dentist. Many of our patients see the Therapist between their dental check-ups.
Yes. Bring your toothbrush, floss, any interdental brushes, and any mouth rinse you use. We want to see what you actually use at home so we can help you use it properly.
No. Most patients describe it as far more comfortable than a traditional scale and polish. There's no metal scraping. It's a stream of air, warm water and fine powder.
Often, yes. Bad breath is usually caused by bacteria building up between teeth and below the gumline. Removing that build-up and getting your home cleaning right typically makes a noticeable difference within a few weeks.
About 45-60 minutes for a standard visit. Longer if it's your first appointment or you have more build-up to clear.
