What Are Fillings

A filling repairs a tooth that has been damaged by decay or wear. Tooth structure is one of the few things in the body that doesn't grow back, so once it's lost, the only option is to replace it. A good filling stops the decay spreading, restores function, and protects the natural tooth around it.
We use white materials only. Different materials suit different situations - Cerec ceramic for the most durable repair, composite for most everyday fillings, glass ionomer for temporary or sensitivity-prone cases. We'll talk you through which is right for you before we do anything.

Who Fillings Are For:

  • Anyone with new tooth decay
  • Patients with old amalgam fillings that need replacing
  • Patients with cracked, chipped or worn teeth
  • People with sensitivity caused by exposed dentine
  • Anyone wanting an old silver filling replaced for cosmetic reasons

Problems Fillings Solve:

  • Active tooth decay before it spreads
  • Cracks and chips in teeth
  • Sensitivity from exposed dentine or worn enamel
  • Old amalgam fillings that have failed or are leaking
  • Cosmetic issues from visible silver fillings
  • Pain from cavities that have reached the nerve

What Happens When You Get a Filling at Tangmere

1

Diagnosis and Material Choice

We confirm the filling is needed, show you what we're seeing on the magnified video or X-ray, and explain your material options. Cerec ceramic is the most durable. Composite is the most common choice. We give you the cost of each option upfront so you can make a real decision.

2

Numbing the Area

We numb the tooth properly before we start. We take time over this so you don't feel anything during the work. If you're nervous about injections, tell us before the appointment and we'll talk you through it.

3

Removing Decay and Preparing the Tooth

We remove the decay and prepare the cavity. We use magnification throughout so we only take out what we need to. If we're replacing an old amalgam filling, we use barrier systems to protect you from mercury exposure during removal.

4

Placing and Finishing the Filling

We place the new filling, shape it to match your bite, and polish it smooth. You leave with a tooth that looks natural, feels right when you bite, and is sealed against further decay.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Fillings

Amalgam contains mercury, which is a known toxin. The amounts in a filling are small, but we don't think there's a good reason to put mercury in anyone's mouth when we have safe, durable, better-looking alternatives. We haven't used amalgam in years.

Yes, when it's done properly. Drilling out amalgam releases mercury vapour, so we use barrier systems - a rubber dam, high-volume suction, and a separate clean air supply - to protect you during removal. Without those precautions, removal can actually be more dangerous than leaving the amalgam in.

Cerec ceramic if you want the most durable repair (around 20 years, give or take five). Composite for most everyday fillings (around 10 years, give or take five). Glass ionomer for temporary fillings or sensitivity-prone teeth (around 5 years). We'll recommend what fits your situation - durability, position in the mouth, budget and cosmetics all play a part.

Cerec ceramic: ~20 years. Composite: ~10 years. Glass ionomer: ~5 years. Natural tooth structure properly looked after lasts over 100 years, which is why we always recommend prevention over repair where it's possible.

A Cerec ceramic filling is a solid piece of porcelain made in our practice in a single visit. It's more durable, doesn't shrink as it sets, and won't stress the tooth. A composite filling is a plastic-and-ceramic material placed in layers - more common, faster, but doesn't last as long.

For most everyday fillings, yes. For larger repairs where you need maximum durability, Cerec ceramic is actually stronger than amalgam ever was and lasts longer.

No. We numb the tooth properly before we start. You may feel pressure or vibration during the work, but no pain. If you're nervous about injections, tell us before the appointment and we'll go through it with you.
