What Cerec Repairs Actually Means

Cerec stands for CERamic REConstruction. It's a system that lets us design and make a porcelain crown, veneer, inlay or onlay in the practice itself, while you're still there. We scan your tooth with a small camera, design the replacement piece on a computer, and a milling machine cuts it from a solid ceramic block. The whole thing fits in a single visit.
The result is genuinely better than a traditional lab-made crown for most situations. The ceramic is denser. The fit is more accurate. You don't need the tooth cut down as much. There's no temporary crown to fall off between visits. And the ceramic itself behaves more like natural tooth than any other repair material we have access to.
We've had Cerec on-site since 2007. By this point we use it for everything from simple back-tooth inlays to full smile-makeover veneers.

Who Cerec Repairs Are For:

  • Patients needing a crown for a heavily damaged or root-treated tooth
  • People with a broken tooth or a failed older crown
  • Patients with large fillings that have failed
  • Cosmetic veneer cases on front teeth
  • Anyone wanting the most durable single-tooth repair available
  • People who can't easily attend multiple appointments

Problems Cerec Solves:

  • Large cavities too big for a normal filling
  • Cracked, chipped or worn teeth
  • Failing or visibly aged older crowns
  • Front teeth that have been damaged or discoloured
  • The hassle of two or three appointments for a single crown
  • Temporary crowns that fall off between visits

Made and Fitted in One Visit

A typical Cerec appointment is 90 minutes to two hours. You leave with the finished, polished ceramic restoration in place. No temporary, no second visit, no impression material.

How a Cerec
Appointment Works

1

Diagnosis and Tooth Preparation

We confirm Cerec is the right repair for your tooth and explain how it compares to alternatives. We then numb the area and remove the old filling, decay or damaged tooth structure. For amalgam removal we use barrier systems to protect you from mercury exposure.

2

3D Camera Scan

We dust the tooth with a fine reflective powder (the same material used in the food industry as white colouring, completely safe to swallow). A small camera then captures a series of 3D images at 19μm accuracy. The Cerec computer stitches them into a virtual 3D model of your tooth and the teeth around it.

3

Computer-Aided Design

Your dentist designs the replacement piece on screen. Shape, biting surface, contact with the next tooth - all designed for your specific bite and how the new piece fits with the natural teeth around it. The design is more accurate than anything that could be done by hand on a plaster cast.

4

In-Practice Milling and Glazing

The Cerec MCXL milling unit cuts the design from a solid ceramic block. A single tooth takes about 11 minutes to mill, at an accuracy of ±25μm. If you're having a cosmetic case, we then kiln-fire stains and glazes onto the surface in the practice's ceramic studio to colour-match the surrounding teeth.

5

Bonding and Polish

The piece is bonded to your tooth using dental adhesives, set with a curing light, and the bite checked and polished. The finished restoration is structurally bonded to what's left of your natural tooth - the bond is part of what makes Cerec stronger than the original tooth was.

Frequently Asked Questions About
Cerec Repairs

Cerec ceramic has an ~85% survival rate at 18 years, declared by Zurich University in 2007 as the new "de facto standard material" - more durable than gold restorations. With good care, a Cerec crown should last 20+ years.

Two reasons. First, the ceramic is industrial-grade solid material with no internal flaws (lab crowns are built up in layers on plaster, which is structurally weaker). Second, Cerec ceramic has very similar physical properties to natural tooth - it expands and contracts the same way with temperature changes - so the bond is very stable. The combined tooth-plus-ceramic structure is actually stronger than the original tooth was.

Yes. A traditional crown usually requires cutting the whole tooth back to a peg. Cerec only requires removing the old filling and any defective tooth structure. Less drilling, less cost (no crown core build-up needed), more natural tooth preserved.

There's published evidence showing a ~30% reduction in the incidence of root canal treatment after large Cerec restorations compared with traditional methods. Lower stress on the tooth during placement, better fit and the bonding effect all reduce the risk of nerve damage later.

Yes. Cerec veneers and crowns are routinely used on front teeth, including full smile makeovers. The ceramic studio lets us kiln-fire custom stains and glazes onto the surface to colour-match the rest of your smile.

Numb, comfortable, a bit longer than a standard appointment. Around 90 minutes to two hours from arrival to leaving with the finished crown bonded in place. The actual milling happens behind the scenes while you have a break, so the time in the chair is broken up.

Not always. For some situations - certain bridge configurations, or where the tooth structure is too compromised - a traditional lab-made crown or another approach may be better. We'll always be honest if Cerec isn't the right call for your specific case.
