What to Do if You Have a Dental Emergency

Dental emergencies happen - a broken or knocked-out tooth, severe pain, a lost filling or crown, swelling, an abscess. The right thing to do depends on whether you're a registered patient with us, what time it is, and what's going on.
Below are the contact details for in-hours, out-of-hours and non-registered situations. If in doubt, call the main practice number first - we'll point you in the right direction.

What Counts as a Dental Emergency

Some things genuinely need urgent attention. Others can wait a day or two for a normal appointment. As a rough guide:

Treat as urgent (call straight away):

  • Severe, persistent tooth pain
  • Significant facial swelling
  • An abscess or pus from the gum
  • A knocked-out adult tooth (time matters - the sooner it's reimplanted, the better the outcome)
  • Trauma to teeth or jaw from an accident
  • Uncontrolled bleeding after an extraction

Probably wait for a normal appointment:

  • Mild toothache that paracetamol manages
  • A lost filling that's not causing pain
  • A loose crown that hasn't fully come off
  • General sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet
  • Mild cosmetic chips that don't hurt
If in doubt, call us. We'd rather you check than wait on something serious.

If You're Not a Registered Patient

Unfortunately we don't currently have capacity to offer emergency treatment to non-registered patients. If you're not registered at Tangmere:
Try your previously registered dentist first (your registration may not have lapsed)
Contact the NHS out-of-hours service at St Richard's Hospital (01243 793697)
Phone NHS 111 for general urgent care advice
We're sorry not to be able to help directly. The practice is almost at capacity and we're only able to take on a small number of new private patient registrations at present, with no NHS places available.

Frequently Asked Questions About
Dental Emergencies

Time matters. If the tooth is whole, rinse it gently in milk or saliva (not water), try to put it back in the socket if you can, and call us immediately. If it can't be reimplanted, store it in milk or saliva on the way to us. The sooner we see you, the better the chance of saving it.

Take paracetamol or ibuprofen at the recommended dose to manage the pain. Avoid putting heat on the area (heat makes infections worse). Call our out-of-hours number (01243 958900) for advice and to arrange treatment if needed.

Usually not. If it's not painful, a lost filling can normally wait a day or two for a regular appointment. Avoid chewing on that side and keep the area clean. Call us during normal hours.

In-hours emergencies are seen by whichever dentist has space. For continuity, we'll do everything we can to slot you in with your usual dentist if it's not urgent. Out-of-hours emergencies through the private rota service may be seen at a different practice within the local network.

Unfortunately no. We're almost at capacity and don't have space to offer emergency care to non-registered patients. Try your previous dentist or the NHS out-of-hours service at St Richards Hospital (01243 793697).
