Dental Implants

A precision titanium replacement for a missing tooth's root, designed to hold a crown, bridge or denture in place for decades. The closest thing to a natural tooth replacement we currently have.

What Dental Implants Are

A dental implant is a small titanium screw that's fitted into your jawbone where a tooth used to be. The bone bonds to the titanium (a process called osseointegration), which gives the implant the same kind of anchorage your natural tooth root used to have. Once it's healed, the implant supports a crown, a bridge or a denture, just like a real root would.
The reason implants are the preferred option for most missing teeth is durability. Looked after properly, they last decades - often a lifetime. They don't involve cutting down the teeth next to the gap (which a bridge does). And they slow down the bone loss that always happens after a tooth is lost.

Who Dental Implants Are For:

  • Patients with one or more missing teeth
  • People with healthy teeth either side of a gap who'd prefer not to cut them down for a bridge
  • Patients with loose or uncomfortable dentures who want them stabilised
  • Anyone who's lost a tooth and wants the most permanent replacement
  • Patients with enough healthy jawbone to support the implant (we always assess this first)

Problems Implants Solve:

  • A missing tooth that's affecting your bite or appearance
  • A gap that's causing food trapping or neighbouring teeth to drift
  • Loose or unstable dentures
  • The slow loss of jaw bone that happens after teeth are lost
  • The need to cut down healthy teeth for a traditional bridge
  • The hassle of removable dentures for patients who'd prefer a fixed solution

It Starts With an Assessment

The most important part of implant treatment is the planning. A 3D CT scan tells us exactly how much bone you have, where it is, and whether implants are realistic. From there we plan everything before any surgery.

How Dental Implant Treatment
Works at Tangmere

1

Detailed Assessment

A consultation, examination, and a 3D CT scan that measures the bone in millimetres. We assess whether you have enough healthy bone to support the implant, where it should sit, and the angle it needs to be placed at. If bone is limited, we discuss whether grafting is needed.

2

Treatment Planning

Once we know what's possible, we plan the full sequence - any gum or bone preparation, the implant placement, the healing time, and the final crown or bridge that will sit on top. You see the full plan, the timeline and the total cost before anything starts. No surprises mid-way.

3

Implant Placement

The implant is placed in the jawbone under local anaesthetic. The procedure is more straightforward than people often imagine - small access, accurate placement, no pain during the work. The implant is then left undisturbed for 3-4 months while the bone bonds to it.

4

Healing and Osseointegration

During the healing period the bone literally grows onto the titanium surface, locking the implant in place. We check progress at intervals. You can usually eat normally on a temporary tooth or denture during this time.

5

The Final Crown, Bridge or Denture

Once the implant has integrated, we attach an abutment (the connector piece), then place the final crown, bridge or implant-stabilised denture on top. The end result feels and functions like a natural tooth.

Stopping Loose
Dentures With Implants

If you have dentures that move when you eat or talk, implants can solve the problem. We place implants (usually 4 in the upper jaw, 2 in the lower) and the denture clips onto them like press-stud fasteners. The denture becomes stable for chewing and confident speech, but can still be removed for cleaning. This is often the single biggest quality-of-life improvement we can make for a long-term denture wearer.

Frequently Asked Questions About
Dental Implants

Looked after properly, implants typically last decades. Many last a lifetime. The crown or bridge that sits on top may need replacing once or twice over that period, but the titanium implant itself is designed to stay where it is permanently.

You won't feel the procedure itself - we use local anaesthetic so the area is completely numb. Most patients describe the experience as easier than they expected. Mild discomfort and some swelling for a day or two afterwards is normal, controlled with standard painkillers.

Often, yes - but it may need bone grafting first. Bone naturally shrinks where a tooth has been missing for some time. The CT scan tells us exactly what's there and whether grafting is needed. In some cases sinus lift surgery is used to add bone in the upper back jaw.

Usually 4-6 months from start to finish for straightforward cases. Faster if no grafting is needed; longer if bone grafting is part of the plan. The implant itself takes 3-4 months to bond to the bone after placement.

Yes. The crown on top is designed to match the colour, shape and size of your other teeth. Most patients can't tell which tooth is the implant once it's in.

Yes. Implant-stabilised dentures use locator attachments that clip onto implants like press-stud fasteners. Usually 4 implants in the upper jaw or 2 in the lower are enough. It's one of the most life-changing treatments we offer for patients struggling with loose dentures.

The components themselves (the titanium implant, the abutment, the precision-made crown) cost more. The surgical placement takes longer and uses specialist equipment, including the 3D CT scan. The trade-off is durability - implants typically last twice as long as a bridge and don't damage the teeth either side of the gap.

Yes. We offer payment options including 0% finance over various terms for implant cases. We go through the full cost and the payment options at your consultation.
