What is Guided Biofilm Therapy

Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) is a Swiss-developed system that's changed the way teeth and gums get cleaned. Instead of metal scalers scraping along your teeth, it uses a controlled stream of air, warm water and a fine powder to remove plaque, staining and biofilm. It works above the gumline and below it, and it's noticeably more comfortable than a traditional scale and polish.
We use GBT as standard at every hygiene appointment at Tangmere. It's not an extra you have to ask for. Most patients describe the difference as the most comfortable cleaning they've ever had, with teeth that feel smoother and look brighter than they did before.

Who GBT Is For:

  • Anyone due for a hygiene appointment
  • Patients who find traditional scaling painful or uncomfortable
  • People with sensitive teeth or sensitive gums
  • Patients with stains from coffee, tea, red wine or smoking
  • People with implants, crowns, bridges or orthodontic appliances
  • Anyone who wants their teeth to feel genuinely clean

Problems GBT Solves:

  • Plaque and biofilm above and below the gumline
  • Surface staining from food, drink and smoking
  • Discomfort from traditional scale and polish
  • Gum inflammation from biofilm build-up
  • Hard-to-reach build-up around implants, crowns and orthodontic work
  • The "scratchy" feeling some people associate with hygiene visits

What Happens at a
GBT Appointment

1

Disclosing the Biofilm

We use a safe disclosing solution that briefly stains any biofilm on your teeth, so we can see exactly where it is. You see it too. This is genuinely useful because biofilm is invisible to the naked eye, and most people miss the same spots every day.

2

AIRFLOW Cleaning Above the Gumline

The handpiece projects a gentle stream of air, warm water and fine powder onto each tooth. It lifts the biofilm and staining away without touching the tooth with metal. Sensitive areas, crowns, implants and orthodontic work all get the same gentle treatment.

3

PERIOFLOW for Below the Gumline

For gum pockets or deeper areas, we switch to PERIOFLOW, which uses an even finer powder designed for below the gumline. This treats early gum disease without the discomfort of traditional deep scaling.

4

Polish, Check and Plan

A final polish smooths everything off. Your therapist checks the result, takes you through anything specific to your home care, and sets the date for your next visit. Most people are every six months, but we set the interval based on your individual risk.

Frequently Asked Questions About
Guided Biofilm Therapy

A standard scale and polish uses metal instruments to scrape plaque and tartar off your teeth. GBT uses a stream of air, warm water and fine powder instead. No metal touching the tooth. It's gentler, faster, and reaches places metal scalers struggle with.

No. Most patients describe it as the most comfortable cleaning they've had. The water is warm, not cold. The powder is fine, not abrasive. There's no metal scraping.

Yes. The powders we use are made of erythritol or sodium bicarbonate - both safe to ingest in the small amounts involved. We also use suction throughout the appointment, so very little ends up in your mouth anyway.

It removes most surface staining (coffee, tea, red wine, smoking). Deeper stains within the tooth itself need teeth whitening rather than cleaning - we can talk you through that separately if you're interested.

Yes. GBT is actually one of the safer cleaning methods for implants and crowns because there's no metal scraping that could scratch the surface. We use it routinely for patients with implants, crowns, bridges and orthodontic work.

Yes. You can book GBT directly with one of our Dental Therapists. No need to see the dentist first.

Almost everyone. We'd avoid it for patients on a strict salt-restricted diet (if we're using sodium bicarbonate powder) - we'd switch to a different powder in that case. We'd also check with you if you have respiratory conditions like uncontrolled asthma. Otherwise, yes.
