Crowns & Bridges

Rebuilding a damaged tooth, or filling the gap from a missing one. Cerec same-day ceramic where it's the best option, and traditional UK lab-made crowns and bridges where they're the right choice.

What Crowns & Bridges Do

A crown is a cap that covers and rebuilds a tooth that's been heavily damaged, root-treated or worn down. A bridge replaces a missing tooth by using the teeth either side of the gap as supports for a fake tooth in between. Both are used to put your mouth back to full chewing function and a natural appearance.
We offer two main routes. Cerec same-day ceramic, designed and made in the practice in a single visit, is what we'd usually recommend for single crowns and many cosmetic veneers. Traditional UK lab-made crowns and bridges - including porcelain bonded to metal - are still the right call for certain bridge configurations and specific clinical situations. We'll always explain which we think is right for you, and why.

Who Crowns & Bridges Are For:

  • Patients with a tooth too damaged or decayed to repair with a filling
  • Anyone whose existing crown or bridge has failed or looks worn
  • Patients who've had root canal treatment and need a crown to protect the tooth
  • People with a missing tooth where the neighbouring teeth are healthy enough to support a bridge
  • Patients with a cracked or chipped tooth that can't be repaired by filling alone

Problems Crowns & Bridges Solve:

  • Teeth too weak to take a normal filling
  • Root-treated teeth that have gone brittle
  • A failing older crown or bridge that needs replacing
  • A gap from a missing tooth
  • A weak or cracked tooth at risk of breaking
  • Cosmetic problems with badly discoloured or misshapen teeth

Cerec or Traditional?

We'll talk you through both options before any treatment starts. Cerec is one visit, more durable for single teeth, removes less natural tooth. Traditional is sometimes right for bridges and specific cases. Either way, you see all the costs and timelines upfront.

How a Crown & Bridges Treatment
Works at Tangmere

1

Diagnosis and Tooth Preparation

We confirm Cerec is the right repair for your tooth and explain how it compares to alternatives. We then numb the area and remove the old filling, decay or damaged tooth structure. For amalgam removal we use barrier systems to protect you from mercury exposure.

2

3D Camera Scan

We dust the tooth with a fine reflective powder (the same material used in the food industry as white colouring, completely safe to swallow). A small camera then captures a series of 3D images at 19μm accuracy. The Cerec computer stitches them into a virtual 3D model of your tooth and the teeth around it.

3

Computer-Aided Design

Your dentist designs the replacement piece on screen. Shape, biting surface, contact with the next tooth - all designed for your specific bite and how the new piece fits with the natural teeth around it. The design is more accurate than anything that could be done by hand on a plaster cast.

4

In-Practice Milling and Glazing

The Cerec MCXL milling unit cuts the design from a solid ceramic block. A single tooth takes about 11 minutes to mill, at an accuracy of ±25μm. If you're having a cosmetic case, we then kiln-fire stains and glazes onto the surface in the practice's ceramic studio to colour-match the surrounding teeth.

5

Bonding and Polish

The piece is bonded to your tooth using dental adhesives, set with a curing light, and the bite checked and polished. The finished restoration is structurally bonded to what's left of your natural tooth - the bond is part of what makes Cerec stronger than the original tooth was.

Frequently Asked Questions About
Crowns & Bridges

For most single crowns, Cerec is the better option - more durable, made in one visit, removes less natural tooth. Traditional crowns are still right for certain situations including some bridge configurations and where specific material properties are needed. We'll always recommend what fits your case.

Cerec ceramic crowns last around 20 years with good care. Traditional porcelain-bonded-to-metal crowns typically last 10-15 years. Good hygiene, regular check-ups and avoiding grinding extend the life of any crown.

A bridge uses the teeth either side of the gap as supports for a fake tooth. An implant is a freestanding titanium root with a crown on top - it doesn't involve the teeth around it. Implants last longer but cost more. Bridges are quicker and don't require surgery, but they do involve preparing the supporting teeth.

Only for traditional lab-made crowns and bridges. Cerec is fitted permanently on the same day, so no temporary is needed.

Yes, in the right situation. For single-tooth gaps where the neighbouring teeth need crowns anyway, a bridge can be a good, conservative choice. For most other situations, an implant is a better long-term solution. We'll go through the trade-offs for your specific case.

Yes. For Cerec we kiln-fire custom stains and glazes onto the porcelain in the practice to match. For traditional crowns we send detailed shade information to the lab. For visible front teeth we always do a try-in to check the match before final cementing.

Cerec: 90 minutes to two hours, with the finished crown bonded the same day. Traditional crowns: about 60-90 minutes for preparation, then a separate 30-minute fitting appointment 2-3 weeks later.
