WHAT IT IS

Why a Plan for Children

Children and teenagers are in a critical phase for their lifelong dental health. The habits they learn now - regular check-ups, regular brushing, regular hygiene - tend to stay with them for life. So does the resistance to decay that comes from preventive care done right in the early years.
The challenge is that for many families, getting children to the dentist regularly comes down to cost. The Denplan for Children scheme is designed to remove that barrier. A single small monthly payment covers all the routine care your child needs, with most treatment work included too. No surprise bills. No reason to delay a visit.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

What's Included for Under-18s

WHAT'S NOT INCLUDED

What's Not Included

The following are not standard inclusions and would be charged separately, usually at a discounted rate to standard private fees:
  • Orthodontic treatment (braces, aligners)
  • Cosmetic work
  • Treatment requiring referral to a specialist
  • Sedation
  • Laboratory fees for complex work
For orthodontic treatment specifically, we'd usually plan and price this separately as it's a defined course of treatment with its own cost structure. Your child can stay on the plan for routine care while having orthodontics done in parallel.

Transition to adult plan
Children can join the Denplan for Children scheme from any age, though most parents start when their child first comes for a routine examination at around age 2-3 years. The plan continues until your child turns 18, at which point they'd usually transition to one of the adult plans (Care or Essentials, depending on their dental health by then).
There's no clinical assessment required to join - children's dental risk bands aren't used the same way as adults. The cost is a flat monthly fee that's consistent regardless of where your child's teeth are starting from.

WHY THIS MATTERS LONG-TERM

Why Childhood Dental Care Matters Long-Term

There's good evidence that the dental health someone has as a teenager is a strong predictor of their dental health as an adult. Children who grow up with regular check-ups, hygiene visits and a preventive approach generally need much less treatment as adults. The opposite is also true - children who only see the dentist when something hurts often end up with adult mouths that need a lot of work.
We're not just trying to fix children's teeth as we find problems. We're trying to give them the habits and the dental health that mean they'll need less treatment for the rest of their lives. The Denplan for Children scheme is structured around that.

FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions About Denplan for Children

Any age. Most parents start when their child first comes for a routine examination, usually around 2-3 years. The plan can run from then until your child turns 18.

We can confirm the exact monthly fee at your child's check-up. It's a flat fee (not banded like the adult plans), so it's the same for all children on the plan.

They'd transition to one of the adult plans - Denplan Care if they have significant dental work or need broader coverage, Denplan Essentials if their teeth are healthy. We'd assess them at their check-up after their 18th birthday and recommend the right move.

No. Braces and Invisalign are priced separately as a defined course of treatment. Your child can stay on the plan for routine dentistry while having orthodontic work done. We typically don't recommend orthodontic treatment until permanent teeth are fully through (typically age 11-13+), so this is more relevant for older children and teenagers.

Each child has their own membership, but we can manage all of them through one set of Direct Debits from your account.

Worldwide emergency cover is included. They're covered for emergency dental treatment abroad through the Denplan emergency assistance scheme - exact terms are in the Denplan member handbook.

Yes, all necessary X-rays for routine care are included. X-rays are taken sparingly with children in any case, only when clinically justified.

We're particularly experienced with nervous children. Several of our team have specific training in treating anxious patients, including Dr Chaplin-Rogers, who has a special interest in sedation dentistry. The plan covers the routine care; if sedation is ever needed for a specific treatment that's discussed and quoted separately.
